Mahakaleshwar Jyotirlinga is situated in Ujjain,Madhya Pradesh .Ujjain is famous for its pilgrimage centre. Mahakaleshwar Jyotirlanga is amongst the twelve Jyotirilingas of Lord Shiva.It is situated next to Lake 'Rudra Sagar'. Shiva is in the Lingam form known as 'Swayambhu'.

History :

The temple was destroyed by Sultan Shas-ud-din Iltutmish regime during 12 th Century. The Present temple is developed by collective efforts of people like: General of Srimant Peshwa Baji Rao, Srimant Raanojirao Shinde Maharaj , Madhavrao Shinde and Chhatrapati Shahu Maharaj during ancient times. It was managed by Dev sthan trust and Municial authorityfor some period. Mahakaleshwar Jyotirlinga is now under a rule of collectorate.

Importance/Significance :

As per ancient indian scripture 'puranas',Ujjain was called as Avantika. Ujjain was a place of religious and cultural importance. During ancient period, students from all over the country used to go to Ujjain to study ancient scriptures. As per a legend, Chandrasena was rulerof kingdom of Ujjain. He was a ardent devotee of Lord shiva. He used to worship Lord shiva all the time. Once, Shrikar, a farmers boy was walking past a temple for a routine work. He heard noise of King Chandrasena chanting Lord Shiva name,amused by the same, he went near him and startedpraying with him. Meanwhile, King Chandrsena's Guards taken him away from the spot and lefthim on the outskirts of the city. While wandering near Kshipra river , He came to know about the plan of a coup of King Chandrasena by King Singhaditya & King Ripudamana of neighboring place. Shrikhar started to pray to Lordshiva for the well being of king ,and this piece of news spread to a priest of the temple known as 'Vridhi ',but unfortunately the rival king attacked the king and looted everything with help of demon known as 'Dushan'.As soon as, Lord Shiva came to know about this incident, he took the Mahakala Avatar , and destroyed the enemy with his great power. On the request of Shrikar and Vridhi, Lord Shiva decided to remain in city for the protection and well being of people. Lord Shiva Became the Principal deity of the the kingdom.

Facts/Mythology :

Ujjain temple is a colossal structure representing the power of Lord Shiva. People are allowed to see Linga on the occasion of Naga Panchami. It is multi storeyed structure. Koti Tirtha (Kunda) is placed in the temple and its water is very holy. Temple is blessed with a very big veranda, which increases the beauty of the temple. Mandapan is constructed to facilitate restrooms for the devotees.

Mahakaleshwar Jyotirlinga is known for celebrating many utsavs and festival through out the year. Nitya yatra is celebrated in Ujjain .Baikuntha Chaturdasi is celebrated in the temple with joy and zeal by followers of Lord shivain Ujjain. Peolpe take procession of the Lord shiva during Dusshera. On the occasion of Mahashivratri ,Ujjain celebrates a fair through out the day. Devotees throng the temple for the fair and to seek blessing from Lord Shiva.
