Trimbakeshwar is a Shiva temple situated in the Nashik District of Maharashtra. It is amongst the most revered temple of Hindu pilgrimage. Trimbakeshwar is blessesd with beautiful Brahmagiri mountain which increases its splendor and serenity . Trimbakeshwar is amongst the 12 Jyotirilingas in India. It is located at the source of the Godavari River, the longest river in peninsular India. Peshwa Balagi baji Rao played instrumental role in establishing this temple. Many other temples like Dattatreya, Shri Nilambika, and Matamba Temple are situated in the vicinity.

History :

A sage known as 'Gautam Muni' was residing in the Bramhagiri hill with his wife 'Ahilya'. During that time,there was famine in all parts of brahmagiri and people were annihilated. Gautam Muni started providing meal to rushis in his ashram. Varuna (Rain God) impressesd by his deeds blessed him with everyday rain in his ashram land. Gautam muni used to feed number of rishis in his Ashram during famine. Rushis were really touched with good deeds of gautam muni. Once Gautam Muni threw dharbha Grass to ward of a cow but it proved fatal, and cow died at spot. Cow was Goddess Parvati's friend, 'jaya ', who had taken form of a cow. Rushis in the temple decided to boycott him but he managed to please the rushis. As per Rushis advice, Gautam Muni began to practice penance to please shiva. Lord Shiva was impressed by the devotion of Gautam muni ,and released ganges., in order to set him off from his sins . After repeated attempts Gautam muni able to ward of his sins at Kushavarta . Kusavarta is a sacred bathing place for hindus. It is also starting point of river Godavari.

Importance/Significance :

Trimbakeshvar is a place of salvation of people sins. People from all over india come here to perform religious rituals like ; Narayan Nagbali; Kalsarpa Shanti and Tripindi vidhi. It has distinction of only temple for performing Narayan Nagbali puja .Trimbakeshwar is a centre of Vedic Gurukuls. It also accommodated many ashramas and muths meant for ashtanga yoga.

Trimbakeshwar is a pilgrimage centre with rich culture and heritage. It is centre of religious importance from time immemorial . Trimbakeshwar is amongst the 12 jyotirilingas of Lord shiva. Jyotirilingas here is of three dimensions with faces of Lord Brahma, Lord Vishnu and Lord Rudra is in visibility . Shiv Linga has started to erode, it is said that this erosion signifies the eroding nature of human race. The entire black stone temple is known for its incredible architecture sculpture and is at the foothills of a mountain called Brahmagiri.

People from all over maharashtra visits trimbakeshwar throughout the year to seek blessings from Lord Shiva. It is a tradition in Trimbakeshwar temple that on every Monday, a priest of the temple carry the idol of Trimbakeshwar in a palanquin on their shoulder around the temple. Trimbakeshwar is know for celebrating Shivrati with great pomp and gaiety. It attracts thousand of devotees from all over india. People come here to take holy dip in Kushavarta Kund.
