Description
The shrine of Mangakyeshwarar Shiva can be found in Edaiyathumangalam which is located near Lalgudi, in the district of Trichy which is found in the South Indian state of Tamil Nadu.
History
Legend has it that Mangalya Maharishi was born with the uthiram nakshatram. The great sages by the name of Agasthyar, Bhairava and Vashistar were married because of the protection he provided. All of his powers of meditation are concentrated in the palms of his hands. He is supposedly regarded as the authority of the archangels that blesses weddings. When it is believed to be a favourable period for weddings to take place, people believe that these archangels pay homage to this shrine and worship Lord Mangalyeshwarar and try to increase their already existing powers so that they can sanctify married ladies so that they can have a long happily married life. It is believed that they are the most powerful in the course of the uthiram nakshatram. Therefore, the enchanted marriage or wedding of the Lord with the Goddess is celebrated on the day of uthiram nakshatram, in Panguni, according to the Tamilian calendar.
Importance/Significance
This spot is referred to as Edayathumangalam because many years ago, it was found to be placed amid two rivers. The word Aaru refers to river whereas the word 'Edai' refers to 'sandwiched between '. In this shrine, the great Lord Shiva is called Mangalyeshwarar. He is seen with his wife, Goddess Parvathy who is also referred to a Mangalambigai. Lord Shiva is seen facing the eastern direction, whereas his wife, Goddess Parvathy faces the southern direction. This shrine is rather small, but it also houses minor temples that are built in honour of various Gods and Goddesses such as Nandi, Navagrahas, durga, Lord Ganesh, Bitchandar, Maharishi and Dakshinamoorthy, among others. One can also witness an idol of Lord Muruga, who is seen standing with two of his wives, namely- Deivayanai and Valli.
Facts/Mythology
Young women who have not been married, especially those who are born with the uthiram nakshatram, are supposed to pray to the Lord here, in turn he removes the obstacles that they are facing that is causing a delay in their marriages, and blesses them with a long happily married life. Once they find a suitable match for the wedding, the first visitant to be invited to the marriage is Mangalya Maharishi. The marriage invitation card is kept at the feet of the Lord and he is prayed to by the families, asking him to bless the bride and the groom with a long, happily married life. After the marriage takes place, the newly wedded ladies pay homage to the shrine in order to thank the Lord for helping them to find a good husband. Moreover, married ladies come to this temple and pray to the Lord asking them to extend the lives of their husbands. Old people who have been abandoned by their own children are said to be unified with their families, if they pray to the Lord in this shrine.
