Immayilum Nanmai Tharuvar Shiva Parvathy Temple is an ancient temple located in the religious city of Madurai, in Tamil Nadu. Dedicated to Lord Shiva this temple is of great religious significance. It is believed that the Lord showers his blessings and relieves one of all the sins making him pure.
History
The history behind this temple goes like this. Long back, it is believed that Lord Shiva came to the earth and married Meenakshi, daughter of the king of Madurai-Malayadwaja Pandya. As a result, Lord Shiva became the ruler of the state. Since, then the lingam of Shiva has been worshipped in the form of Immayilum Nanmai Tharuva and the temple is known as Immayilum Nanmai Tharuvar Shiva Parvathy Temple. This form of Shiva is represented by a worshipping posture.
Importance/Significance
The temple holds high significance in the sense that anyone who worships the temple is believed to be rid of all the evils. Further, they are relieved from the chakra of birth and rebirth. It is also considered very auspicious to worship the lord and offer one's devotion before taking up any position of responsibility, for lifelong success. There are certain unique rituals which take place in this temple. One of them refers to Pukozhi walking which means walking on fire. This ritual is one of its kinds and it is believed that people who undertake this are equivalent to those who indulge in deep penance for days together. This is usually observed the very next day after the festival called the Vaikashi Vikasam. Because of this unique ritual which brings the person close to salvation, this place is sometimes referred as Kailash of south. Another unique feature is one of its trees which are known as the Vilwa tree. This tree has about 10 stems and holds religious importance. Persons with Jupiter dosham are believed to be relieved of all their distress, if their worship the lord and perform certain rituals in front of the tree. Puja of the tree is a must and hence is the tree has a unique importance. Another feature is that this is the only temple where the Shiva lingam is facing west with the idols of Shiva and Parvati placed right at their back. Devotees worship and offer their prayers, facing westwards which is considered very pious and sacred.
Festivals/Events/Gatherings
Mahashivratri is the main festival of the temple which is organized on a grand scale and attracts thousands of devotees. Other noteworthy festivals and puja's which are observed in the temple are Brahmotsavam which is held in the months of February and March, Avani Shiva Pooja which is observed during the beginning of the Saavan month and Tirukarthikai which takes place in the November-December month. Another festival which is celebrated on a grand scale is Vaikasi Visakam which is usually observed in the months of November and December. This festival is one of its kinds and is observed in this temple only which makes it quite unique.
