Description
Sri Meenakshi Amman Sannadhi is enshrined in Brahmapureeshwarar Shiva Temple, a historic Hindu temple located on the southern bank of the Vaigai River in the temple city of Madurai, Tamilnadu, India. It is dedicated to Parvati, known as Meenakshi, and her consort Lord Shiva, here known as Sundareswarar.
History
The temple was built in the 7th century.  The temple is believed to have been destroyed by the infamous Muslim invader Malik Kafur in 1310. The temple was rebuilt by the first Nayak king of Madurai, Viswanatha Nayak (1559–1600) under the supervision of Ariyanatha Mudaliar, the prime minister of the Nayak Dynasty.
Importance/Significance
The lady goddess Meenakshi is the principal deity of the temple, not Sundareswarar, unlike most Lord Shiva temples in south India where Lord Shiva is the principal deity.  It is one of the few temples in Tamilnadu to have four entrances facing four directions. There is a massive Nataraja sculpture enclosed in a huge silver altar here.
