Description
The Grishneshwar Jyotirlinga Shiva Temple is an ancient temple dedicated to lord Shiva which is located at a distance of about 30 kilometers from Aurangabad in the state of Maharashtra. This forms a part of the 12 Shiva Jyotirlingas and is considered to be a very sacred religious spot. The place is very well connected by roads, railways and flights and can be easily reached from any part of the country. It lies nearby the Ellora caves
History
There is a beautiful history, in the form of legend which backs up the story of the temple. Long ago, there lived a Brahmin by the name Brahmavetta Sudharm in the mountains of devagiri. He used to live with his wife Sudeha. However, they did not have a child. Sudeha tried all means but nothing worked for her. In the end she requested her sister Ghusma to marry her husband. Ghusma married him and since she was a staunch devotee of Lord Shiva, she used to make 101 lingas of Lord Shiva on a daily basis, worshipped them and then she would place them on the nearby lake as means of visarjan. Pleased with her devotion she was blessed with a beautiful baby boy. They lived happily but Sudeha was too jealous of her sister's son and hence one day plotted to kill him and threw him in the same lake in which Ghusma used to place the Shiva lingams. The next day, the wife of the boy saw blood stains on her bed and was alarmed. She rushed to Ghusma and her father in law, enunciating the entire story. They were worshipping the lord at that moment and hence they continued to do the same without being sad. Ghusma had deep faith in the lord and believed that he would protect her son from all odds. After commemorating the usual puja, she went to place the Shiva Lingams in the lake and saw that her son was coming out of the lake. Again she was neither happy nor sad. Seeing her devotion and her self control, Lord Shiva appeared before her to give her darshan. He granted her one wish to which she requested the Lord to stay in this particular place to give darshan to all his devotees and also to name the temple after her name. This is the how Grishneshwar Jyotirlinga Shiva Temple got its name
