History
The sajjeshwara temple is one of the Panchalingam temples in the south. Located in Karnataka, this temple has lord Shiva in his most commonly worshipped form that is the linga. The Sajjeshwara Shiva Temple in Sajjeshwara, Coastal Karnataka is a small temple that is about a two hours' drive from Gokarna, Karnataka. The temple is not visited by too many people and therefore, it retains the calmness and serenity that is usually associated with a place of worship. Though it is a small temple, it has a major mythological significance and therefore, it is also a pilgrimage spot for all Shiva devotees.
Facts/Mythology
The temple is linked to the panchalingam temples in the south. The sajjeshwara Shiva temple stands on the spot where the casket of the mahalingam or atma-linga fell on being broken by Ravana. On touching the ground, the casket is said to have taken the shape of a separate shivalinga. The story that is associated with the temple is that the atma-linga that Shiva owned had the power to help all Hindu gods attain immortality. Ravana, the king of the state of Lanka wished to attain immortality to gain utmost power and control over the world. in order to fulfill his wishes, he prayed to lord Shiva and having pleased him with his devotion obtained a boon from him. Utilizing this boon, Ravana gained the custody of the atma-linga. Worried that Ravana would attain immortality and wreak havoc in the world, narada implored Lord Ganesh to do something to regain the custody of the atma-linga from Ravana. Ganesh knew that lord Shiva had set a condition on Ravana that he should not set down the linga before reaching Lanka. Utilizing this knowledge, Ganesh took on the disguise of a Brahmin boy and capitalized on the devotedness of Ravana. With the help of an illusion from lord Vishnu, and his own wittiness, Ganesh was able to take the linga from Ravana and set it down on the ground. Having understood the ploy, Ravana tried to move the linga from the ground, breaking it into pieces. The casket containing the atma-linga is said to have fallen in Sajjeshwara. The road to the Sajjeshwara Shiva Temple passes through Karwar and is a beautifully scenic one. It offers a perfect amalgamation of simplistic faith and natural quietude. Those who are the strict devotees of lord Shiva make it a point to pay their visit to this temple and seek the blessings of lord.
