There is a legend behind this temple. It is said that long back there once existed a demon by the name of Namuchi. He prayed to Lord Brahma to grant him the wish that he would not be killed by anything which is dry or wet. He performed deep penance and meditation for days together which eventually led him to gain the boon. After attaining it, he started creating havoc in the life's of all devtas. Seeing such a situation Lord Indra planned to destroy the entire force of Namuchi with the help of Lord Vishnu. He took his sudarshan chakra and placed it inside the waters of the ocean which led to the cave near Sukshmakaram which was believed to be the hiding ground of the demon. The lord appeared from the middle of the sudharshan chakra and blew away the demon with the fire that came out from his mouth. Hence, he came to be known as Sudarshan Narashimha. In the period of Ramayana, Lord Rama had advised Anjaneeya to stay in Mangalgiri forever, as this would give him salvation. He agreed to the same and received moksha. Hence, this place is also called Mukhtyatri as one who worships here gets moksha.
