History
The ancient temple was mostly built in the 6th century by one of the Pallava kings, in the then capital of their empire, Kancheepuram. Legend has it that the temple was built by Lord Indra when he was on a pilgrimage redeem himself of his sins.The history of the temple is uncertain though it is believed that King Vijayaraya Chakravarty in the eighteenth century built the temple in the form in which it stands today. The Chamundeshwari temple was built in the 12th century by Hoysala King, Vishnuvardhana. Adi Shankaracharya was the one who established both the Sharadamba temple, as well as the Sharada Peetham, at Sringeri.The temple has been in existence for 1200 years. The existence of temple has two stories.The position in which the temple is located was once a heavy woodlands that was considered to be swarmed by yakshis and rakshsas. Kannappan, a tribesman used to reside in this woodlands.According to the Puranas, Goddess Kamakhya is the giver of desires and thus she is regarded as the one who denotes the procreant aspects of nature.The pooja done in honour of the goddess Saraswati is a simple one, but of great benefit to those who are in the pursuit of knowledge. The original temple at Quelossim (Keloshi) in Salsete was destroyed by the Portuguese in 1564.Mythology says that Attukal Bhagvathy is the divine form of Kannaki, the heroine of Chilapathikaram, a Tamil work by the poet Elenkovadikal. Kannaki was married to Kovalan, who was a merchant's son. Arunasura was the leader of asuras. He started to harass sages and disturb their yajnahs.The legend has it that after the Mahabharata war, sage Veda Vyasa embarked on a pilgrimage in search of peace.This Sri Venkateshwara Temple is having a history of many years. Legend has it that the 5 Pandava brothers came here and placed their firearms beneath a tree. After which, they prayed to Sri Maha Prathyangira Devi and roamed the jungles.The temple has been rebuit several times with additions made to the original temple.Legend has it, that Arjuna, one of the Pandava brothers, battled Lord Shiva during the manifestation of Kirata.

A number of occasions that are celebrated over the months- the annual festival, ther and theppam in spring, and other festivals include Navaratri and Aippasi Pooram that are celebrated in the month of Vaikasi.There are fifty priests, who reside in the shrine; they perform various rituals during festivals and also on a daily basis.The festivals celebrated here at the Samayapuram Mariamman Devi Temple are:- • Thai Poosam festival is celebrated in the month of Thai, a Tamil month. •The festival of Dussehra is celebrated with pomp. The main festivals that are celebrated in this shrine are those of Dussera and Navaratri. Every day there are prayers of five different kinds during Dantadavana; morning, afternoon, evening and night.People gathers here in huge numbers during 'Makom Thozhal' from February to March, which is the most celebrated event of the temple.The shrine of Kamakhya is situated amidst nine other temples which are devoted towards the Mahavidyas, that are ten in number, they are Kamala, Bhairai, Bhuvaneshwari, Sundari, Kali, Matangi, Chinnamalasta, Dhumavati, Tara and Bagalamukhi. Hence all these can also be visited.The Festival of Shantadurga Prasanna, in January, involves a night time procession of chariots bearing the goddess followed by over 100,000 faithful devotees.The most important festival celebrated here is the Attukal Pongala, which witnesses grand celebrations and a massive crowd.Kateel is known for its celebration of many festivals annually. Thousands of devotees bath in the river Godavari & seek the blessings of the Goddess during the Mahashivarathri, Dassera navratris and Vasantha panchami.All the festivals related to the Lord Vaishnava are celebrated here. A ritual by the name of Muttu Neekal is performed by the priest on behalf of the devotees for providing them with knowledge, to ensure that their children are in the best of health, for finding a suitable marital match and for relief from various diseases.
