Description
Panruti Thiruvadigai Viruttaleeswarar Shiva Temple is an ancient temple located in the Cuddalore district of Tamil Nadu. The temple is believed to be around 2000 years old which is illustrated by the architecture of the temple. Cuddalore is very well connected by roads and railways and can be easily accessed from any part of the state.
History
There is a legend behind this temple. Long back there lived three demons by the name of Vidyunmali, Kamaakshan and Tharukakshan. They prayed to Lord Brahma for receiving boons from him and performed series of rigorous penance in order to please him. Lord Brahma was pleased with them and granted them a special power which would keep them immortal. After receiving this power, the demons started creating havoc on earth disturbing the lives of one and all. They used their powers in a malefic way. Seeing this, the devta's went to Lord Shiva for their protection. Shiva made a plan to fight against the demons and with the help of Earth as rath whose wheels were sun and moon; he planted the devtas as his army. While this was happening, the devtas started to realize their importance and thought that lord Shiva could not gain victory without their help. This gave an idea to the Lord to destroy and teach lesson to the demons as well as the devta's at the same time. He did not use any weapon or took any help from his army members. The lord just laughed which brought out a ball of fire from his mouth. This fire ball destroyed the demons and also destroyed the pride and arrogance of the devtas. After this incident, the place became very pious and eventually the temple was built as a mark for destroying the ill effects from one's life.
Importance/Significance
The temple is considered to be very sacred. People who worship the spot are relieved of all their evils and are purified instantly. People also seek blessings from the lord to remove any obstacles which comes along the path of their success.
Facts/Mythology
A unique fact about the temple is that the Shiva Lingam is self- manifested and contains 16 stripes which are very rare to find. Further, the temple is shaped in the form of rath with the idols of Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvathy beautifully carved on the backside of the sanctum. This is also the first place in India where the evils were destroyed by the lord.
Festivals/Events/Gatherings
Vasanthutsav which is observed in the months from March to April is one of the biggest festivals which are observed in this temple. Vaikasi Brahmotsavam is another festival which spans for about 10 days and is usually observed in the month of May or June. This festival is famous for its procession where the lords are taken on vehicles which are made of Silver work. Ekadashi and poornima are also observed with great pomp. The temple is also considered an ideal spot for organizing marriage events and mundan ceremony.
