Kanchi Varadar Varadaraja Perumal Vishnu Temple is located in the State of Tamil Nadu. Dedicate to Lord Brahma this temple is one of its kind.
History
Kanchi Varadar Varadaraja Perumal Vishnu Temple is located in the sacred placed of Kanchi. Ka essentially means Brahma and Anjitham means who has been worshipped. Hence, the place derives its name from the incidence of Lord Brahma having worshipped Varadaraja and hence the place is known as Kanchi. Historians also believe that the temple was built in the 11th century by the Pallavas. However, there are certain instances which point to the fact that the temple might have been built by Cholas. A clear cut answer is not available. Further, during the rule of Robert Clive, he visited the temple on the auspicious festival of Garuda seva and offered the lord a beautiful necklace. This necklace is still adorned by the Lord on special occasions every year. All the more, Clive also performed certain rituals as a mark of his devotion to the lord. These rituals till date are considered very important and anyone performing the same is blessed by the Lord
Importance/Significance
The temple is considered very religious. It is believed that once in a year on the day of full m on which usually falls in the months of April or May (called the Chitrai), Lord Brahma himself comes to give darshan. These days are considered very sacred for worshipping. There is also a unique feature of the temple. On this special day when the Lord Brahma is believed to come to the temple, priests keep the food inside the sanctum and leave it for about 24 hours. Miraculously, it turns sweeter. The same is distributed amongst all the devotees in the form of Prasad. It is also believed that those who worship the lord and perform certain rituals are purified and relieved of all the pains and negative energies surrounding them.
Facts/Mythology
The legend behind this temple is amazing. Long back Lord Brahma decided to do a yagna which was a very difficult one to do. However, at the same time Lord Indra was relieved of the curse to him by Goddess Saraswati. He decided to destroy the yagna by flowing water on top of it. In the meantime the almighty Lord Vishnu came to know of his plan. He laid himself on his back just to ensure that the waters stay still and does not overflow. The incident also witnessed the emergence of the Lord Vishnu in the form of suns radiance. He became to be known as Devarajaswamy and he decided to make the spot his abode of living. Since, that day the temple has been a center for Vaishnavas.
Festivals/Events/Gatherings
Bhramotsavam is one of the most important festivals celebrated in this temple which is witnessed by thousands of devotees. It is usually held every year in the month of May or June. Apart from this festival which is also known as chariot festival and the Garuda vahama festival are also observed with great devotion. The events are organized on a great scale which attracts many devotees and tourists.
