Description
Thayumanavar Temple is a temple situated in the Rockfort complex in the city of Tiruchirappalli. The temple is situated close to the base of the Rockfort and was constructed by the Pallava king Mahendravarman I in the 6th century AD. Shiva is worshiped as Thayumanavar and is represented by the lingam and his consort Parvati is depicted as Mattuvar Kuzhalammai. The presiding deity is revered in the 7th century Tamil Saiva canonical work, the Tevaram, written by Tamil saint poets known as the nayanars and classified as Paadal Petra Sthalam.
Importance/Significance
Offering pooja to the God here is said to bless couples with the joy of child birth and help to beget children. The biggest offering which is said to be given to God is bringing the new born child who's birth was expected to the Thayumanaswamy Shiva Temple and doing his mundan and abhishekam here. Mundan is the process of having the first hair of the child's head and his nails given to god as a gift and at the same time appears as a sacrifice made with thankfulness. One can definitely also go by legend and offer a pooja specially made with mantras that can help to provide a fruitful delivery.
Facts/Mythology
According to legends, it is said that a lady called Ratnavati, who was an ardent devotee of lord Shiva had bore a child without father. This was an act which was considered to be a crime within the society in those times. She was therefore, out casted from the society. Lord Shiva was extremely touched by her devotion and felt for her situation. So during her delivery Shiva himself came in the form of her mother to help her deliver the baby and since then this place has its own significance for those who want to conceive or want a smooth pregnancy.
