Description
Sigandur is a tiny village which is encircled by luscious forests and waters i.e. river Sharayathi. The village forms a part of the Sagar Taluka in the state of Karnataka. The temple is home of Goddess Chowdeshwari who is also referred as Sigandur Chowdeshwari in the temple and the village. The goddess that resides here is considered to be quite powerful and the nearest town to the village is at about a distance of 42 km from the village and the Sagar Taluka. There is yet another idol installed in the temple which is the idol of mother Sigandur Chowdeshwari. The idol is quite old and was found around 300 years ago on the banks of river Sharavathi. This idol is prayed and worshipped by devotees to bless them with peace and prosperity. There are many buses and local rickshaws or cabs that will take you to the nearby spot of the village Sigandur. The climate here is pleasant most of the time in the year. Although summers can get a bit severe here and as far as monsoons are considered the area receives moderate amount of rainfall.
History
As mentioned before the history of the temple is about 300 years before. As per the story a person from the village Sheshappa had gone for hunting in the nearby village when he lost himself in the forest area. He was sleeping under the tree when he got dream of Goddess Sigandureshwari and she asked him to build a temple for him. Sheshappa narrated this dream to the pries of the village and both of them together built a temple for the goddess. Sheshapa became the trustee of the village. Many people from the state of Tamil Nadu and nearby areas come here to seeking solutions to their personal and business related problems. Many people who have had some property related issues or had lost some valuable possessions got their problem solved with the blessings of Goddess Sigandureshwari.
Importance/Significance
The unique features of the temple include its development related activities undertaken by the temple trustee and other people of the village. With the divine grace and blessing of the goddess there has been a guest house constructed which has 60 rooms with most of the facilities built in. There is also a large dining hall constructed which feeds lakhs of devotees every year. There is also a large hall constructed which is used for marriage and other temple related activities like functions and meetings. Apart from this the temple conducts lot of other social activities for cleanliness and health of the villagers.
Festivals/Events/Gatherings
Every year a big and grand fair is conducted here which is known as Jathre is conducted. This annual fair is conducted on the month of January on the day of Makara Sankhranti. During this festival devotees from different parts of South India visit the temple to seek the divine blessing of goddess Sigandur Chowdeshwari. Makara Sankhranti is one of the most auspicious days as per Hindu tradition.
