The Last renovation was perhaps done in 1981 when Sri D.V.Gajendra Prasanna Jois, who was the 6th Dharmakartharu of the temple, built new toilets, a drainage system, steam cooking facilities, rooms for shelter for visiting pilgrims and also started the ritual of giving free clothes to the employees of the temple and their families every year.
Importance/Significance
The most important fact about this Horanadu Annapoorneshwari Devi Temple is that visitors are given food and shelter whenever they come because the name of the goddess "Annapoorneshwari" means "one who feeds all". Thus, no visitor returns hungry. Food and shelter as a blessing are there for every devotee that comes to visit the goddess.
Festivals/Events/Gatherings
According to Hindu mythology, Annapurna Devi, praised in Annada Mangal is an incarnation of Goddess Parvati, the consort of Lord Shiva. She is the Goddess of nourishment as anna means food and poorna means complete. The story goes like this that once Shiva said to Parvati that food is a part of 'maya' or an illusion of the world. Parvati got angry and to make everyone realize the worth of food and material values, disappeared from the world and as a result the world became barren. There was hunger everywhere from the lack of food. Seeing the people suffering, the compassionate Mother Parvati reappeared in Kashi and opened a kitchen there. Hearing it Shiva went to her, sought forgiveness upon his realization and presented his bowl as an act of begging. Mother Parvati fed Him with her own hands and this form is worshipped as 'Annapoorna', the giver of nourishment. The image signifies greater truths than the apparent. The full bowl in her hand shows that she has food for all and the spoon in her hand signifies that she is always ready to serve her devotees. The receiving hand of Lord Shiva signifies that he is accepting the flow of energy from the higher level and the bowl he holds means that the nourishment he receives from Shakti will not go to waste. Thus the Annapoorna image of Parvati feeding Shiva has greater significance and inner spiritual meaning than just Shiva begging to Parvati.
