The village comes under the Dornakal Assembly. Kuravi comprises of one of the most holy and sacred Shiva temples in all of South India. Archaeologists and historians state that the temple was built by the then kings of Warangal, the Kakatiyas. They built the temple in order to worship their deity of generations, i.e. Lord Shri Veerabhadra Swami. The lord's consort, Shri Bhadrakali was also subject to their worship. The Temple is therefore known across the land as the Shri Bhadrakali Veerabhadra Swami temple. The temple is visited very frequently upto this day by the tribal and rural people that live around it in addition to the several thousands of pilgrims that make their way to this destination all year long. The village itself has several amusing features. Every Monday, for instance, the town hosts a cattle fair, wherein the farmers of the land gather together to purchase or sell their cattle. The village is also replete with modern day facilities. There exists a commercial bank called Andhra Bank, which lies in close proximity to the Shri Veerabhadra Swami Temple. Such facilities have been appreciated widely by both the locals of the village as well as the tourists that visit the location for their pilgrimage.
History
This temple is committed to the great Lord Veerabhadra Swamy, who is a deity with a seemingly rage filled idol. The idol itself is extremely magnificent, the lord having three eyes and ten hands. The temple dates back to several thousand years ago. It is believed to have been constructed by the renowned ruler 'BheemaRaju' of Vengi Chalukya Dynasty. The temple was later subject to renovations and the renovation was performed by the great Kakatiya ruler 'Betharaju-I'. This temple has been referred to in several historic accounts. An important reference would be the mentioning of this temple by the acclaimed traveller 'Marko-Polo'. The village and temple stood out since it was the capital of the Vengi Chalukya Dynasty. The chief deity is Lord Veerabhadra Swamy, with the fear inducing idol being worshipped all across the land.
Facts/Mythology
Veerabhadra is also referred to as Veerabhadra Swamy. He is one of the few chosen Shiva Ganas. Lord Veerabhadra is worshipped also as an independent Hindu Deity by some individuals in some temples and holy places. During the performance of such worships, he is hailed as the son of Lord Shiva. It is said that Lord Veerabhadra had originated from a single strand of hair that fell upon the earth, thrown by Lord Shiva. Lord Shiva did this upon learning of the death of Goddess Sati. Goddess Sati sacrificed herself by immolating. Thus, Lord Veerabhadra is said to be a form of Shiva's angst.
Festivals/Events/Gatherings
During the festive occasion of Maha Siva Rathiri, it is estimated that nearly 40,000 devotees visit the temple. They offer prayers in order to attain the blessings of the gods.
