Srimushnam Bhoo Varahaswamy Vishnu Temple is located at Srimushnam in Cuddalore, Tamilnadu. The temple is dedicated to the Lord Vishnu and is worshipped as Bhoo Varahaswamy; his wife Lakshmi is worshipped as Ambujavalli Thavar. The interiors and exteriors of the temple are eye soothing and pleasing. The temple exists here from 11th Century and it is believed that many kings from 1560 to 1614 have put in their equal efforts for this temple.
History
According to Hindu Mythology, the demon king Hiranyakshan dominated the earth and nether land. He was creating a terror on the land and even harassing Bhu Devi, divine ruler of the nether land. She prayed and approached the almighty to release here from the clutches of evil demon king. Lord Vishnu was pleased by the prayers and immediately he took form of a boar and killed the king and thereafter appeared at the place.
Importance/Significance
The people here do have great sacred feeling and devotion for the temple. In the temple the Vishnu is considered to be eight swayambus of Kshetras, deity presiding on its own. The temple is designed as per the Dravidian Architecture and lot of carvings of the ancient times can still be seen in this temple. Throughout the year lot many people come here to feel the bliss of the eternal times. In the premises, there is also a statue of Lord Hanuman lifting Ram and Lakshman which is very rarely seen. According to the Hindu locals the place is very sacred and the temple has special place reserved in the heart of Vishnu. People are often seen here wishing or praying the almighty for the future endeavors. Devotees here are expected to visit from the western entrance of the temple.
Facts/Mythology
Mostly the childless couple or even the unmarried people do visit the temple. In three steps the rituals are conducted alangaram (decoration), nevietham (offering of food) and deepa aradnai for God Vishnu and Goddess Lakshmi. The five tiered gopuram of the temple on the eastern side is prayed and worshipped during Vaikuntha Ekadashi. On daily basis for the deities poojas like Ushatkalam on 7.30 am, Kalasanthi at 8.00 am, Uchikalam at 12.00 pm, Sayarkashai at 6.00 pm, and Irandakalam during the night.
Festivals/Events/Gatherings
On regular basis, Pooja and daily rituals are performed six times. During occasions many people do visit the temple do seek blessing and proactively participating in rituals; especially during the Tamil months of Masi and chitra. The temple also uses processional Vehicles for the deities during the events. The other festivals like Aavani, Navratri, Vijayadashmi etc. are also celebrated here with great pomp. Throughout the year there are various events and festivals that are celebrated as per the Tamilian Calendar. From the Navak times and as per the inscriptions, some of the religious festivals are practiced. During Diwali or Deeputsovam thick crowd can be seen in the temple premises. The temple priests here whole heartedly follow the duties and continue the great patronage of aesthetic values.
