Description
As the name suggests the Vinayagar temple is in located in the village of Arumugamangalam in Tuticorin district of TamilNadu. The moolavar is known as Aayirathu Enn Vinayagar. The temple's history dates back to 2000-3000 years. The greatness of the temple is that Sri Adi Sankara sung his Ganesha Pancharathnam in front of this God on his way to Thiruchendur. He worshipped Lord Muruga in Thiruchendur and sung Subramania Bhujangam for curing devotee's physical issues. People all over Tamil Nadu throng the temple to seek blessings from God Vinayagar.
History
According to one of the legend, Lord Ganesha or Vinayagar temple, was first constructed in Tiruchengattankudi of Thanjavur district in TamilNadu in the 7th century. There is a belief that this temple was built 2300 years ago, and this claim is not justified. There is a custom among Hindu people to worship the Vinayagar first, before start of a new work or performing of Pujas to other gods. If the custom is followed, then this belief is also to be accepted by all who have faith in god. We can make Vinayagar even with sand or turmeric powder. This is the way this temple is believed to come and blesses his devotees. In the 4th century a king named Somara Vallaban performed a yagna. He arranged thousand eight Brahmin Vedic pandits from Narmada river region. Their number is short of required thousand eight people and Lord Vinayagar filled the gap and appeared as thousand eight Brahmin Vedic Pandits and assisted the yagna to be complete as per Vedic following. From then on the Vinayagar is called as 1008 Vinayagar and people offer Indian Rupees 1008 as Dakshina.
Importance/Significance
The temple is visited by Adi Sankara. The temple specialty is that there is a Rath, flag post which is rarity in Vinayagar temples. In earlier days the Brahmins of this village installed this Vinayagar on the banks of a tank. They started worshipping the god and then constructed the mandapam. In the later years people through collection of funds, installed many gods inside the temple. The Tiruvavaduthurai Adheenam has donated the car, flag post and other deities.
Festivals/Events/Gatherings
The three kala Pujas is performed in the temple as per traditions by Brahmin priests. The important festival is Vinayagar chathurthi celebrated with grandeur. The other important festival of the temple is annual 10 day Chithirai function which will be celebrated with a procession of Heramba Ganapathy. The procession of Lord Natarajar is celebrated on the seventh day of the festival. The temple is managed by HRCE board of TamilNadu Government. It is open to public from 6 AM to 12 NOON in the morning and from 5 PM to 9 PM in the evening. The devotees perform special Pujas for conducting the functions without any trouble. People pray for their well being of the children and removing hurdles in their marriage. The temple is well connected with pucca roads and can be reached from any part of the state.
