History

This was usually done with a bunch of disciples on a regular basis. One day, out of curiosity, Sri Sankaracharya stayed at this place for a prolonged period thus attaining his Samadhi. Coincidentally, it was the same spot where the Srichakra existed. Slowly, an anthill began to grow on the same spot. Over the time period, the anthill got stronger and cases of children being hurt by hitting it started being reported to Marthanda Varma, the then king of Kerala. He analyzed the entire situation and decided to build a grand temple on this spot. Regular puja's were held and thus it transformed into a significant temple in this area. This ancient history is treasured in this Mandaikadu Bhagavathy Devi Temple which is also sometimes referred to as the Bagavathi amman. This is basically the 15 feet tall anthill which is enshrined in the Sabarimala.
