The temple can be reached by air, rail or road from any part of the state. Accommodation is available in plenty and according to their budget.
History
The temple is dedicated to Lord Vinayagar and this temple is a history of about 500 to 1000 years. Its specialty is that it is Asia's biggest Uchishta Ganapathy temple.
Importance/Significance
In Pillayarpatti Vinayagar temple, the main deity is Lord Marudeesar and here in this temple Lord Vinayagar graces his devotees in a big form as a sub deity means Parivaramurthi in Tamil. There are two Vinayagar temples in Tirunelveli town with flag masts means Kodi maram in Tamil. One is Sandhi Vinayagar and other is Sarkarai Vinayagar temple is in pettai and in a distance of 5 KMs from town. But this temple is the bigger of the two with Uchishta Ganapathy as main god. The temple walls are lengthy and it is seen from the depleted condition of the compound wall. The temple is built with five tier rajagopuram. There is a long and open space once you pass through the rajagopuram. The temple has a mahamandapam and it is without any deity.Lord Ganapathy blesses his devotees and his trunk is like a naval of a woman. There is a story behind this incident. A woman is happy when she is blessed with a child and attains motherhood. She look forward to see her child to grow up right manner and courteous and give respect to elders. She also expects her to be obedient to their parents. The devotees firmly believe that worshipping Ganapathy in this form will give them child who will follow above mentioned qualities. There is one such Vinayagar in Sankaranarayana temple in Sankarank oil. You cannot see a Vinayagar in this form in any temple. The temple has also a small shrine for Lord Nellaiyappar. The temple is now in depleted condition and the HR&CE board of TamilNadu Government has set up a committee to renovate the temple. The renovation estimate is about 65 lakhs.
Festivals/Events/Gatherings
Like in other Vinayagar temples the main festival is Vinayagar chathurthi and it comes in the Tamil month of Avani (August and September). The devotees perform abishekam and offer clothes or Vastras to Lord Ganapathy. The temple is located on the banks river Thamiraparani. The temple has three kala Pujas and under the control of TamilNadu Government. The temple is open to darshan from 8 AM to 11.30 AM in the morning and from 6 PM to 7.30 PM in evening.
