Description
Somnath Temple is situated in Saurashtra,India. It is often called as 'Holy abode of Lord shiva'. It has currently become the most sought after tourist destination of the pilgrims. The temple is identified because of various celebration connected with the temple and Lord Shiva. The existing temple is designed in the Chalukya style and it also shows the expertise of the Sompura Salats, one of Gujarat's expert masons. The temple is endowed with shikhara, which is 15 metre in breath and high banner rod of 8.2 metre in height . Temple is open to devotees from morning 6:00 am to 9:00 pm.
History
It has survived the six-repeated Invasion by the Islamic Rulers. The very lifestyle of this temple is icon of rebuilding soul and social oneness of our community. After the assimilation of Junagadh as a part of india , Sardar Vallabhbhai patel visited Junagadh and made firm commitment of erecting Somnath temple to its past glory. Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel and KM Munshi took Mahatma Gandhi advice to renovate and build the temple to a symbol of India's prosperity . On the idea of renovating the temple, Mahatma Gandhi reacted assertively to Sardar patel's idea. After the demise of Sardar Patel and Mahatma Gandhi,KM Munshi took the lead position . After years of hardwork, a edifice structure was in place, and it was inaugurated by then President Dr Rajendra Prasad, who declared it as a symbol of india's prosperity. Somnath temple is built in many phases in various forms like Gold, silver, wood, and stone. Sardar Patel has the distinction of being a creator of new Somnath temple. The temple is under the control of Shree Somnath Trust, which look after daily activities of the Somnath temple.
Importance/Significance
Somnath is blessed with many holy place in the premises like : Hari Har Tirthdham, place where Lord Krishna was hit by a poacher; Geetamandir, message of Bhagvad Gita was incripted on eighteen marble pillars ; Balramjiki Gufa, a place where Lord Balaram started journey to nijdham-patal; Parshuram Tapobhumi ;a place where Bhagvan Parshuramji started his penance for absolving his sins of killing kshatriyas and pandavas visited Jalprabhas to take holy bath. As per ancient scriptures, Moon God got married to 27 daughters of Daksha Prajapati, but Moon God liked rohini and less interested in others. Daksha Prajapati got angered by this, cursed Moon god . On the advice, Moon God started doing penance. The Moon God is said to have been treated from the curse of his father-in-law Daksha Prajapati by the blessings of Bhagvan Somnath.

Thousands of enthusiastic devotees throng the somnath temple daily to seek divine blessing from the Lord shiva . Somnath temple is known for enjoying various activities and celebrations like Holi, Diwali & Shivratri. Many vratas are observed with great passion by the enthusiastic devotees. Somnath temple is accustomed to perform aarti 3 times a day, which is witnessed by thousands of devotees.
