Description
Sri Venkataramana Temple also known as the Padutirupathi Temple is one of the most famous temples in the Southern India. It is situated on the serene coastline of Karnataka in Karkala in the Udupi district, is a famous tourist attraction. This temple is a perfect example of belief and brilliant artwork and immediately strikes with the mention of Karkala. Sri Venkataramana Vishnu temple is one of the ancient temples resembling the Tirupati temple. This auspicious temple is a symbol of faith, devotion and peace.
History
When the Portugese occupied the region of Goa, the Gaud Saraswat Brahmins came to Karnataka along with all their necessary day to day items to find shelter. This temple has its inception around the 14th century and it belonged to the Jain Odeyars who ruled Karkala . The Gaud Saraswat Brahmins obtained this land from these Jain Odeyars, so that they could make a start again. Thus the accurate date of its inception is unknown.
Importance/Significance
This is a very historical and eminent temple that belongs to the Gaud Saraswat Samaj and its reinstallation took place in the year 1537 A.D. The primary deity of this temple is Lord Venkataramana, who is believed to be a manifestation of Lord Vishnu. Another interesting facts about Lord Venkataramana is that he is also known as “Bhakta Vatsal” meaning that he is very affectionate towards his devotees. Thus it is believed that Lord answers the prayers of his devotees by fulfilling their wishes and removing the obstacles in their lives. The Garbha Griha in the temple has a throne for the deity which is gold plated. Also the deities are guarded by two Dwarkaapaalas namely Jaya Vijaya. This temple sanctum is beautifully designed with black stones with the walls covered with brass plates and the roof with copper plates.
Facts/Mythology
This temple is closely related to Tirumala, so all the rituals and the puja traditions followed are similar to that in the Tirupathi Temple. There are pujas performed since morning like Suprabhatam shloka for waking up the God, then removal of the old flowers and decorating it with fresh ones which is known as the Suprabhata Nirmalya Visarjana, followed by this is Ganji Naivedyam i.e. offering of rice and navneetham (mixture of sugar, sesame and butter), and then comes the Panchamrut Abhishek . Also in the noon again naivedyam is offered to Lord in a huge copper plate. At evening 8 pm a Mangal arti is done again offering the naivedyam. Thus these and many more such rituals are performed in this temple throughout the day.
Festivals/Events/Gatherings
The Sri Venkataramana Temple is very recognized for its Lakshdeepothsava festival. This is the festival of lights. The Chariot festival also takes place in this temple. Chakrotsava is a celebration that is done with great enthusiasm and perfection, but still the main attraction of this temple has been its installation ceremony. An exemplary piece of architecture, beauty and faith this temple is definitely worth a visit.
