Chottanikkara temple situated near Ernakulam in the southern india in the state of kerala . It is know for its architecture which is the testimonial for the ancient Vishwakarma sthapathis .It is one of the most popular temples in the state along with Sabarimala Bhagawati. Devotees of Chottanikkara Devi observe temple goddess in three different forms ; as Saraswati in the morning; as Lakshmi at noon; and as Durga in the evening. Apart from Chottanikkara devi, Lord Shiva is also worshiped at the temple. Chottanikkara temple is near to Chottanikkara and Nedumbassery international airport.
History
The position in which the temple is located was once a heavy woodlands that was considered to be swarmed by yakshis and rakshsas. Kannappan, a tribesman used to reside in this woodlands. As a ardent devotee ,he used to sacrifice a cow to Goddess kali every Friday. One day, he discovered a wonderful dark calf near the woodlands. he kidnapped her and took her to his ceremony. Just before he given up the calf, his little girl, Manimanga, walked in and asked for forgiveness for him to quit. The man liked his little girl and thus let her keep the calf as a pet. Unfortunately, Manimanga passed away the next morning hours. However, when the communities man seemed for the calf, he discovered two heavenly rocks in its position : one was Lakshmi and the other was Vishnu. One day, a woodcutter came to the woodlands to cut some plants. Since his axe was dull, he sharpened it it on a close by rock. Suddenly, the rock began to bleed. After devaprasnam, it was determined that the rocks were heavenly. The idol at Keezhkavu did not come until after the temple was designed. One evening, a Brahmin was walking along a moonlit pathway. Instantly, he saw a wonderful lady, all alone. He provided to companion her house, and she agreed. However, when the Brahmin went to the Goddess's preacher, he was informed that it was a yakshi. thus, as he got to know that yakshi is after him, the Brahmin ran to the temple. Just as he reached the temple the yakshi modified and curved up on him. However, the goddess hopped out of the sanctum sanctorum as Kali and murdered her.
Importance/Significance
Chottanikkara Devi is known for healing her devotees misery and fulfilling their wishes by her divine intervention. It is observed that spiritual atmosphere in the temple gives mental peace and harmony to devotees.
Facts/Mythology
In the main temple, the fantastic colored idol of Bhagavathy 4 to 5 ft. great, is designed with blossoms, garlands, jewelry and washed in variety of lighting wonderfully. The idol has four hands. The higher right keeps the disk, the higher remaining keeps the conch, the reduced right hand is organised in a boon-conferring cause and the reduced remaining indicates the abhaya (fearlessness) cause.
Festivals/Events/Gatherings
People gathers here in huge numbers during 'Makom Thozhal' from February to March, which is the most celebrated event of the temple. In ancient time, On the same day, Goddess Bhagvathy, gave darsan to Vilwamangalam Swamiyar and people from all over thronged the temple for blessings. . Many other festivals are celebrated in Chottanikkara temple such as; Chingam; Kanni; Vrishchika; Kumbam; Medam and Karkitakam. People from all over kerala come here to seek blessing from the goddess.
