The historical name for Thiruchenkattankudi is Ganapatheesaram. Thiruchenkattankudi is a village which is located in Thiruvarur district and is famous all over the world for the 1000-2000 years old Vathapi Ganapathy Temple.
History
The Thiruchenkattankudi Vathapi Ganapathy Temple Thiruvarur Tamilnadu is amongst the Padal Petra shiva sthalams. It was the Paranjothi the Chola General who saw this Vinayaka. He worshipped this deity, won the war and brought it from Vatapi, the Chalukya capital. The main idol is that of Lord Shiva which is also known as Uthrabatheeswarar, Ganapatheeswarar, Manthirapureeswarar, Aathvanadhar, Baskarapureeswar, or Pasupateshwarar and the Ambal or Goddesses is Soolligammbal. The pond of the temple is known as, Surya Theertham, Satya Theertham, Agni Theertham, Chandra Theertham, Emma Theertham, Indra Theertham, and Varuna Theertham Sthala Vruksham. The tree of the temple is known as Kattathi or Atthi. It is Lord Uthara Pasupatheeswarar who admires the temple from a shrine which has its own Vimana which is located on the right side of the current deity Ganapatheeswarar. Lord Ganapathi killed Gajamukasuran samharam here. He got bramahathi Dhosham, which is installed here. This is why this place is also referred to as Ganpathiswaram. When a war took place Gajamukasuran a rival, the bloodshed from the body of Gajamukasuran's because of which this place became red in color. Chen when translated means red, kudi means place in Tamil and it is for this reason that this place is also known as Thiruchengattankudi.
Facts/Mythology
The famous Divyadesam temple, Thirukannanpuram temple, Thirumarugal and Tirupugalur, Peralam, Nanillam, Tittacheri Thirunallar etc are nearby places in 10km radius. Karaikal and Thiruvarur are cities not far away around 20 kilometers. This region was once a part of Tamilnads old Chola country - South Cauvery.
