Description
The Theerthamalai Theerthagiriswarar Shiva Temple is a Shiva hill temple whose height is 500 meters. It is a very old temple. Moreover the inscriptions here tell us that the Chola emperors had regularly visited this temple including the Rajendra Cholan
History
Puranas tell us that Lord Rama had had paid his obedience to Shiva in two places during his Ramavathar. One is Theertha malai and the other is Rameshwaram. This is why it is said that if the people take a holy dip in the waters of this spring, it will wipe out the sins committed by the people.Hanuman was sent by Rama to fetch water from the River Ganga in order to worship Lord Shiva, but when Hanuman did not come back at the scheduled time for the pooja, Rama released an arrow onto the rocky slope of the hillock and this is how water started flowing here. It is also the reason as to why this place is known as Rama Theertham. This place serves as a picnic as well as a pilgrimage centre and is becoming very popular with the public. You will find that the temple is situated about one kilometer atop steep slope of a hillock. The temple gets its name from the five springs in the temple. There is a perennial waterfall that falls down from an approximate height of 30 feet. During the summer months and the rainy season the water falls on the bathing ghat behind the sanctum of the temple. All of the other Theerthams have their origin in different parts of the rocky surface. They are namely: Agasthya, Theertham and Agni Theertham. The Hanuman Theertham is situated about 16km from the main temple on the banks of river South Pennar. It is also associated with the temple. When Hanuman returned with the water from the Ganga, he found that Rama had brought the Ganga water with his arrow. Hanuman in a fit of anger threw away the vessel containing the Ganga water and the water which Hanuman threw away fell onto the riverbank.
Importance/Significance
The Theertham of Hanuman is also a very pious place. The waters of the Theerthamalai contain many important and rare medicinal properties. You will be able to come across a lot of inscriptions in the Theerthagireeswarar Temple and all of them are related to Vijayanagar and Chola rulers. You will also come across another spring which is called the Vashista Theertham spring and it is higher up in the hill. You will be able to view the beauty of these sculptures only through a very narrow crevice in the rock. You will also come across another theertham by the name of Hanuman Theertham. This theertham is on the way from Aroor to Oothangarai. It is believed that one should first visit the Hanuman theertham and then go to Theertha malai so as to get full blessings of Theerthangeshwarar.
