Description

The Kailasanthar Temple in Thingalur is located in Tamil Nadu, 18 kms away from Kumbakonam. The presiding diety in the temple is Som i.e Moon (also known as Chandra). But the main idol in the temple is Lord Shiva.

History

According to Legend, there lived a merchant by the name Appoodi Adikal, a nayanar in the village of Thingalur who was a devotee of Lord Shiva. Appoodi Adikal held Appar (a Tamil Saint-Poet) in high regards and wanted to host him. The day arrived, but his son was killed by a venomous snake bite while the saint was being hosted. Appar, moved by Appoodi Adikal's devotion is said to have miraculously restored the lad to life at this place.

Importance/Significance

This temple is one of the nine Navagraha Temples in India. It is dedicated to Chandra Bhagawan (Moon God). This temple is known for its Navagraha Dosham Puja.

Facts/Mythology

The term Navagraha denotes the nine celestial bodies which are central to astrological calculations (and beliefs) (and not the nine planets as it is frequently erroneously translated). Certain planetary conflagrations give rise to strong negative effects called “Doshas”. The Navagraha Temples Puja eliminates the ill effect of these planetary movements. The duration of this puja is 12 months
