Once while Lord Siva was immersed in gaping meditation in his house, Mount Kailash, few drops of his perspiration fell on the land, which had originated from his forehead. A very gorgeous baby had manifested from those drops, which had reddish skin tone and it possessed 4 arms.Lord Shiva handed over the infant to the soil goddess, Bhumhi for upbringing. As the child was nurtured & brought up by 'Bhumhi' (earth), he was named as Bhauma.After growing up, Bhauma went to Mount Kailash(Kashi) to gratify Lord Shiva by doing a tremendous penance. He was blessed and granted the 'Mangalaloka' (residence of Mangala) by Lord Shiva, which was even greater than 'Sukraloka' (residence of the Lord of Venus - Sukra). By the name of Mangala (planet Mars) the similarBhauma is been established.Sambandar, the 7th century nayanarand Tamilian poet who belonged to the Saiva sect, has admired the deity with 4 hymns, in one of which he refers to a dispute with the Jains, and his success. Appar and Sundarar, the other Nayanars have glorified the temple with their hymns. Arunagirinathar(a 15th-century poet) and staunch follower of Lord Muruga has written tranquil hymns about the deity and this shrine is accepted for the devotion of Murugan as well.
