Description
Kaithamalai Vetri Velayudhaswamy Murukan Temple, as the name indicates, is a well dedicated destination for the Lord Murukan devotees. The temple is located in the Kaithamalai village of Uttukuli, Erode in Tamil Nadu. The place is very well known for the production of Butter.
History
There is a fact behind the name of the place � it is said that once when the Agastya saint came for mediation, he could not find any water. He prayed to Lord Murukan for his help and God Appeared in front of him to provide the needful. Since then, the place became famous as Uttukuli and later on came to know as Uttukuli. The history of the temple is not well known. But the trackers are only aware that the temple was constructed during the rule of the kings. It is also believed that the temple was again reconstructed by the donors who were ready enough to sponsor for the same without hesitations. Today, it is very famous in the place of Erode and Coimbatore districts as they share the significance of the temple.Located 40 kilo meters away from the Erode towards Tirupur, the temple is well connected by different cities like Coimbatore, Chennai, erode, etc.
Importance/Significance
Though the temple is not as strong enough as the traditional heritage old infrastructures, it has its own significance. Today, a minimum of 200 people or the devotees visit the temple on daily basis to seek blessings form the Lord Muruka. One of the uniqueness of the temple is that the temple car is located on a hill. During the festival season, that is the Thaippoosam festive time; the temple car will be placed in a chariot and will be pushed by thousands of its devotees. The chariot dragging will be pulled from the hill to the temple and then back to hill so as to relocate the temple car on the hill. Henceforth, the God in the temple car came to be known as the Vetri Vel Velayudha Swamy, which is one of the famous names of the Lord Muruka.

The Lord Muruka is popularly known as the Vetri vel Velayudha samy due to the vel or the spear that is considered as one of the divine entities with Lord Muruka. The main mythology related to the Kaithamalai vertri velayudha temple is the incarnation of Lord in the form of Muruka with the spear or the vel in order to partake in the Thaippoosam Mahostsavam.
Festivals/Events/Gatherings
One of the best events or the gatherings of the Temple include the Thaippoosam festival. It is during this festival that more than 10000 people visit the temple daily. It is a very famous festival of the temple. Thaippoosam (also referred to as Thaipusam) is one of the oldest and traditional festivals celebrated for the Lord Muruka. It is believed that Vel or the spear would take off your adverse characters and complicated natures and help you reflect in a happy and peaceful environment.
