Description
Kulasekarapattinam, the coastal village of Tuticorn district in TamilNadu have Dasara festival to attract over million people every year. The festival is celebrated within the village and it has great significance with the Hindu mythology Sivam and Sakthi. The seashore near to Kulasai Mutharamman Devi Temple provides facilities to the devotees on this festival occasion.
History
In the South to Tiruchendur in the Kanyakumari Highway, thirteen kilometers away from Tiruchendur, the divine place of Kulasekarapattinam situates. It is only 3 kilometers long in the South East direction and 1 kilometer wide in the North West direction. The most convenient ways to reach the temple: From Koyembedu there are hi-tech private buses, which takes you to the temple. From Thirunelveli or Tuticorin, there are lots of government bus services to Thiruchendur.From Egmore, there are two trains namely Nellai Express and Kanyakumari Express which takes you to Thirunelveli and other train namely Muthunagar Express which takes you to Tuticorin.From Thiruchendur town, the temple is located 13km distance and devotees can easily reach at Kulasekarapattinam by auto rickshaw, buses, shared vans etc.
Importance/Significance
Once, owing to the malediction of sage Agathiyar, saint Varamuni had become a man with buffalo head. As he had the buffalo head, he came to be known as Magishasuran and he expanded his power and started dominating the world.To denounce his domination, saints plead to the Goddess. With the blessings of the almighty Goddess, a female newborn appears who was named Lalithambigai. In 10 days, she grew up to be Annai Parasakthi Lalithambigai and destroyed Magishasuran and this 10th day came to be regarded as Dusshera. The period of nine days of the growing up of Lalithambigai is resumed as Navarathri days.The temple origin was initiated by the Viswakarma people of this place when they celebrate Navarathri festival.In the temple, the idols of Goddess Mutharamman and Swami Nganamoorthiswarar are established combined each other. This is a unique feature of this temple which stands unique amongst the other temples. Here Shiva (Gnana moortheswarar) and Sakthi (Muthramman) are ensconced in the same and pedestal poojas are offered for both at one go. In the Garbhagraha, Goddess and Swami shower their favors to the followers in the form of Swayambu Murthigal. Lord Shiva is swayambumurthi in the temple.This famous pilgrim center comprises of 3 Mandapams i.e., Kodi Mandapam, Artha Mandapam, and Maha Mandapam.In the temple, to celebrate Dusshera festival, lakhs of people will assemble from many parts. The same Dusshera itself is celebrated here as a 12 day function instead of 9 days. The final festivity is Vijayadhasami day when demon Mahishasooran was slayed by Devi Mutharamman on the seashore of this village.
Facts/Mythology
Twelve days Dussera Navarathri festival starts on new moon day of Tamil month Puratasi when Sakthi presumes form of Kali and takes the vow to wipe out the demon. Every home and devotees in the region celebrate this festival.3 day Aadi Kodai festival is celebrated in July-August month by dressing Lord and Mother as Kurava-Kurathi. Special poojas and deepaaradhanas are performed on Chithirai first falling almost on April 14.
