Description
This sacred shrine of Mavothu Vellapar Temple is located at the Varushanad hill range, which is around 20 kilo meters from Andipati. Nestling in the hills, the place is at a peak top, surrounded by natural plantations. Transport is easily available to the foot hills only. Rainwater collects around the trees nearby to the temple & it flows downhill in a gush. This is how the place has derived its name "mavothu" which is in the state of Tamil and stands for "spring of the mango grove".
History
A group known as Pazhiar used to live in the area generating a root called Vali Kizangu utilizing it for the purpose of food. They also dug a spot nearby the temple, but failed to take the crop out. The root had embedded too deep. Ultimately, they found the Swayambu Velapar. Zamindar of that place was informed who had built this temple for praising of the lords by the visitors.
Importance/Significance
This temple is located in a pleasing natural atmosphere. The strong faith of the visitors is the main reason that the prayers to Lord Velapar would bless them good health & all the happiness. As per some of the historical reality there is a subterranean linkage with some of the places which are known as Thepam in Thepampatti. There is also a belief that there exist many sages & sidhas conducting expiation in the adjoining hill caves. The lead deity Lord Mavotru Velapar, Vinayak & Saptha Mata shrines are at the hill. Sakti, Karupanna Swammi shrines are near the tail of the hill. Visitors pray to God Velapar for good health & children's welfare, cure from diseases, trade development, business, excellence in academics & weddings. Lord Velapar in the temple is a swayambumurti. There is also a perennial spring under the mango tree towards the south. Maa means mango, Oottru the spring and hence it is called as Mavootru.

This is one of the many hill temples. Lord Velapar is a swayambumurti. There is a perpetual spring under one of the mango tree towards the south of the temple. Devotees perform abishek to Lord with milk, panchamirtham a mixture with ingredients and green coconut. They also carry milk pots and Kavadis.
Festivals/Events/Gatherings
Chithirai Thiruvizha in April-May; Aadi and Thai New Moon days (Amavasya) in July-August and January-February respectively, monthly new moon days and full moon days are the festivals celebrated in the temple. On the event, an adorned chariot holding the 2 idols that of the pair is taken across the place to the loud notes of Nadashwaram & beats of the drums. There is a spiritual ambience that descends on Madhurai. When the procession drives alley the streets & in the area of the 'Devastanam', visitors make donations of flowers, camphor, coconuts, & agarbattis i.e incense sticks. An essence of devotion is marked by gaiety & pomp invades straight through the day. The festival withdraws a mammoth of crowd. A trade fairs & exhibition organized here lend festivity to the occasion. Adi amavasya (blue moon) and thai amavasya are celebrated with gaiety. There is also an annual festival in the month of chithirai of tamil year.
