Description
Pugazhimalai Balasubramanya Swamy Murugan Temple is an ancient Murugan temple which is located in the city of Velayuthampalayam. It lies in the district of Karur, which is easily accessible by roads from any place in the state. A famous religious spot in the state of Tamil Nadu, it attracts thousands of devotees throughout the year.
History
There are certain legends which are associated with the temple. It is said that long back there was a bunch of staunch supporters of lord Murugan, They wanted to worship the lord and bath him with waters. However, there was no river or sea available nearby with the help of which this could be done. All of them were in a fix wherein a small boy child appeared before them and took them to a special place. The boy lightly punched the surface of the earth with his hands and to the amazement of one and all, a spring rose up, with waters splattering everywhere. He also gave darshan to all his devotees and stayed at the very spot. Since then he has been worshipped in the form of Lord Balsubramanya.
Importance/Significance
The temple is of highly religious significance as per Hindu Mythology. One who worships the lord and offers him milk and sandal paste is granted a happy and prosperous life. Further, Lord Murugan is considered to be very merciful and hence relieves the devotees of all their pains very quickly. There is also a Durga shrine inside the temple which is very significant. Those looking for prospective life partners are advised to take lamps filled with lime and offer the same to the Goddess. Their wish of marriage is fulfilled. Further, there is also a certain fast which can be kept by women. The fast coupled with some rituals which are performed only in this temple can help to get a child. Lord Murugan is a very powerful lord and a one-time worship in one's lifestyle is sufficient to stay a peaceful and happy life.
Facts/Mythology
The temple is known for its exceptional architecture. The tower which is present above the main sanctum of the temple is of ekadala design which is one of its kinds. Further, the lord is worshipped here in the form of a young child in the morning hours, a middle aged man in the afternoon, and as an old person in the night.
Festivals/Events/Gatherings
Thaipoosam is the biggest festival which is celebrated in this temple on a grand scale. It extends for about 15 days and is usually held in the months of January or February. Surasmharamin is another grand festival which is celebrated for about 7 days and attracts thousands of devotees in the month of November. Other noteworthy festivals are Karhikai, Aadi Kruthikai, Pongal and deepavali. Apart from these, Karthika puja along with the sashti festival is observed every month with stringent rituals. This too is backed up by a large crowd every month.
