Description
Thiruvidandai is one of the 108 Divya Desam temples in the Sri Vaishnava sect of Hinduism. It is a suburban village located in South Chennai, about 19 Kilometers south of Thiruvanmiyur in the Indian state of Tamil Nadu. It is considered a Varaha Kshetram. This temple is widely believed to bestow good luck to those wishing to get married, and help remove obstacles that prevent marriages.
History
The temple was built by Pallavas. The history of this temple dates back more than 2000 years. It is near the Bay of Bengal seashore. A large temple tank is in front of the temple. This is known as the Kalyana Theertham. There is a separate shrine for Komalavalli Nachiyar. Lord Perumal appears majestically in His standing form facing east. The Vimana above the sanctum sanctorum is called Kalyana Vimanam. The Lord here stands on Adisesha and holds his consort on his left thigh. There is also separate shrine for Andal. The Temple follows Thenacharya Sampradayam
Importance/Significance
Of the celebrated 108 Divya Desams of Lord Vishnu, this is the only temple, where the Wedding Festival is celebrated throughout the year – all the 365 days of the year. Women facing delays in their wedding are advised to pray to Mother in the temple
Facts/Mythology
Pilgrims visit for the blessings of Lord Nithyakalyana Perumal. Those who want to get married offer two garlands. After Puja, the priest gives back one of the garlands. The person wears that garland and does Pradakshinam. Marriage follows soon after
Festivals/Events/Gatherings
The Annual Brahmotsavam is conducted during Chittirai. Garuda Seva is held during the months of Aani, Aadi, Masi and Thai. Vaikuntha Ekadashi is very devotionally celebrated in the temple in December-January.
