Description
A puja at Sri Poomalai Vaidyanathar Temple at Thanjavur in the State of Tamil Nadu can include various traditional attendances. The actual significance of the prayer is to invite the deity or deities. The devotee hosts honour these deities by singing hymns and distributing food as an offering. The chanting is an expression of love and honour and at the end of the prayer.
History
It is believed that Lord Rama performed the last rites of Jatayu, the eagle, who served him, in this temple's Vibuthi Gundam. The eagle was killed when it obstructed Ravan from abducting Sita. Also Veerasenan, came to this temple and brought his son who was ailing with tuberculosis He made his son bath in the 'theertha' in this temple and subsequently offered sweet 'nivedhanas'. He was very happy when his son was completely cured. Lord Vaidyanatha beloved son, Lord Muruga, is praised in this temple as Chella Muthukumaraswami. The offering or the 'prasad' after the Arthajama puja has been described as an effective medicine for numerous diseases suffered by the devotees. A medicine is separately prepared with sacred ash, oil and anthill sand to cure lepers.

The offering of such prayers in this temple with the sole purpose of obtaining relief from illness and other health related issues have been found to be successful with positive results as testified by the devotee hosts who are getting the prayers performed. People suffering from numerous diseases have been found to be cured after the performance of such prayers in this temple. It is a matter of deep faith and has to be looked at from a purely personal and devotional perspective.
