Description
The temple is dedicated to Lord Muruga and Moolavar is called as Balasubramanian and his consort is Gajavalli. The temple is located in Uthiramerur of Kanchipuram district in TamilNadu. This temple's history dates back to thousand years. There are separate place of worship or Sannathi in Tamil for god Ekambaranathar, Goddess Perun Dandam Udayar, Lord Kasi Viswanathar, Lord Santhana Ganapathy and Maha Tirupira sundari and a vel in the shape of god Velayuta Murthi. The devotees as mark of success on their programs offer prayers to the Lord. They also perform special abishekam and take Kavadis to Lord Muruga.
History
According to Legend Lord Muruga is in the form of vel to protect sages in their performing of Penance from the devils menace. From then on the position is called as Ilayanar Velur. In this place at that time was covered with forests and the river Seyyaru was flowing from North to South known as Utharavahini. There are many rishis in the forest and they used to perform Yagna for the well being of universe and mankind. Among many rishis sage Kashyapa was one who stayed in his ashram. Two devils have the habit of disturbing the penance and Sage Kashyapa asked the god to protect his Yagna from two devils.Lord Shiva told the sage for help, and deputed Lord Muruga to annihilate the evils and protect Munivars. Lord Shiva gave his sword to Lord Muruga for protecting them. On the orders of his father lord Muruga swing into action and called the devils not to disturb the penance. But the devils refused to listen and obey his words. After that Lord Muruga put his Vel on east part of the ashram to keep the devils away. In the fight Lord Muruga chopped the head of one devil named as Magaran with the help of the sword given by his father. Upon hearing the death of his elder sibling Malayan the other devil used his magic powers with fight with Lord Muruga. His magic powers were not in use for his fight with Lord Muruga who fought with the weapon of the Lord.The point is now called as Malayankulam and Lord Muruga decided to build a temple in this place with Lord Name as Tirukadamba Nathar. Lord Shiva granted his wish and asked him to stay in the place and graces his followers. At this point the temple for Lord Balasubramanian was built.
Importance/Significance
Lord Kadambanathar Sannathi or shrine is in the north western part of the temple enabling Muruga to offer his prayers. In the northwest part of the temple the vel of Lord Muruga stands in Idol shape. The temple is built on a five tier structure called as raja gopuram. In the temple there were beautiful paintings that depict the marriage of Lord Muruga. Lord Muruga stands in an imposing form and with his vel and cock flag and peacock at his feet. Lord Muruga has two consorts as told in the Puranams. Here they appear in one form as Gajavalli.
Festivals/Events/Gatherings
The temple is following three kala Pujas and special festivals Skanda shasti and Karthigai deepam. The visiting time of the temple is from 5 am to 8 am in the morning and from 4 PM to 8 PM in the evening.
