Description
This temple is dedicated to Lord Shiva. He is worshiped as Adi Kumbeswarar, and is represented by the lingam. His consort Parvati is worshipped as Mangalambigai Amman. Lord Shiva is the Supreme God and listens to sincere prayers. Devotees come here to pray for better career opportunities.
History
The present structure was built during the reign of the Cholas in the 9th century. The later expansions were made by Vijayanagar rulers of 16th century.
Facts/Mythology
The temple complex houses four gateway towers known. The tallest is the eastern tower. The temple has numerous shrines. One of the most unique features about this temple is a sixteen-pillared hall built during the Vijayanagar period that has all the 27 stars and 12 zodiacs sculpted in a single stone.
Festivals/Events/Gatherings
The Mahamaham festival takes place once every twelve years between the months of February - March. Lakhs of pilgrims from various regions of the country visit Kumbakonam to take a holy bath in the sacred Mahamaham tank, located at the heart of the town.
