Description
India is a land full of devotees. People worship many Gods and their forms one if which is Lord Vishnu. Hindu mythology depicts Lord Vishnu as one of the supreme powers that rules the universe. One such artistic example of such devotion, faith and divinity is the Ulagalandha Perumal Vishnu Temple. Situated in the Kanchipuram district of Tamil Nadu, this temple is place of tremendous power and serenity. Very close to this temple is the Kamakshi Amman Temple. Ulagalandha Perumal temple is also one of the Divya Desam, the 108 temples of Lord Vishnu.
History
According to Hindu puranas Lord Vishnu had 10 incarnations on earth whenever there was extreme evil taking place. One of these ten incarnations is the Vamana avatar. A king Named Mahabali who was a devotee of Lord Vishnu had attained supreme powers. Due to this he was troubling all the Gods. To stop this menace of Mahabali Lord Vishnu incarnated as Vamana and disguised as a Brahmin when Mahabali was performing a Yagna. Vamana asked land which he could cover in his three steps. Mahabali promises to fulfill the wish of the Brahmin. This was time when the Brahmin revealed his identity and magnified to enormous proportions. The in the first step he covered right from the heavens to the earth, the next step from the earth to the netherworld (Patala) and this gave Mahabali a realization that he could not fulfill his promise and thus had the consciousness. Thus this is the story of the origin of this temple. The idol of the Lord Vishnu is carved to precision equitable size and height of the Lord. For a person who is familiar to Hindu mythology can immediate recognize as the Vamana Avatar. The idol massively huge and a grandeur to see. The presiding deity of the temple is Lord Ulagalantha Permula or Trivikraman. Also it enshrines Goddess Amudhavalli (Lakshmi) who is the consort of Lord Vishnu. There is a Snake Pond in the which is called as the Naga Theertham.
Importance/Significance
This temple bears a lot of importance in heart of the devotees. As devotees come here to eradicate the sorrows, difficulties and obstacles and fulfill their wishes. The temple is a complex divided into mainly four parts which are as follows: Tiruoorgam which is the central is generally addressed as Peragam, whereas the smaller shrine possesses an image of snake god called Adisesha.Tirukkaragam is the shrine situated in the third precint of the temple, where it is believed that Garga performed his punishment and attained knowledge.Tirukkarvanam is situated in the precint of the temple and the main deity here is Kalvar with his consort. Tiruneerakam is a place where there are images of festival deity.Thus Ulagalandha Perumal Vishnu Temple is a perfect example of excellent of creativity, exquisite artistry and unending faith in Lord Vishnu. Well we often temples not knowing the meaning behind the evolution, but now after knowing this glorious history it will be really amazing to visit this temple.
