Description
Shree Vishnumurthy Temple is located in the Mangalore district of Karnataka. The location is superbly charming with a view to lush green paddy fields. This is one of the oldest temples in the state; there is no written evidence though. People say that it is more than thousand years old. Legends have been attached to it over a period. However, since 1911, the regular rituals are being performed.People say that in the first decade of 20th century, Mudumatta Sri Venkataramana Hebbar saw a small temple in the Parambok land constructed with mud and coconut leaves. The idol was quite impressive. It was made from black granite stone with four hands. He was quite impressed with the idol and started daily rituals.
Importance/Significance
As the old structure was quite small, people felt the need of renovating the premises as there was a great rush during special occasions. Hebbar family was taking care of the large chunk of expenses, but other people also contributed to it. During the first renovation, mud roof was replaced with tiled roof. A Tirth Mandapam was constructed using pillars and a tiled roof. The entire work happened with a contribution of various families like Dasu Poojari family and Duggana Madivala. An idol of Shree Annappapanjurli Daiva was established to keep the evil powers away. Another major development took place in 1963 when K. Parmeshwara Hebbar decided to change the structure of Garba Gudi or the central area with stone and copper structure in the roof. A new chariot (Chandra Mandala) was offered by devotees to the temple in the same year. They also constructed a Ganapati temple in the premises. Another temple of Lord Vasuki and Subramanya was built for devotees. In 1973, they made a wide approach path because there used to be heavy rush during “Utsavam”. The flag pole or Dwajstambha was covered with copper sheets in the same year. The series of innovations was continued in the subsequent years and various people contributed to the work.
Festivals/Events/Gatherings
There are various festivals get celebrated in the temple throughout the year. Naga Panchami, Shrikrishna JAnmashtami, Ganesh Chaturthi, Sinha Sankramana are the major one. Special pooja and offerings happen during these days. Coconut abhisheka , hoovina and prasadam are organized by devotees. Simha Sankramana to Kanya Sankramana is an auspicious month where daily special rituals are performed. A lot of people visit the temple during this month. Similarly from mid December to mid January there is a Dhanu Pooja performed daily. The biggest festival is on the Meena Masa Shudha Chathurdashi that lasts for five days. On the first day, flag hoisting denotes the start of the festival. On second and third day, they perform special rituals and pooja. On the fourth day Rathotsava (The chariot celebration) happens when people put the deities on decorated chariots and take on the street. On fifth day Choornostava and feast are organized for everyone. Nagadarshana and Avabritha are two special festivals. This is an auspicious place with immense peace and purity.
