Located in the Mayiladuturai village of the Tamil Nadu state, the temple is fully dedicated, as the name indicates to Lord Maha Vishnu who is popularly incarnated as Ranganathar in the Trichy temple. Being famous as the Mayiladuturai temple in the state of Tamil Nadu, it is one of the rare ancient temples that exist even today. The temple is famous for the deity that is incarnated. The temple is well connected by road and train to all the cities and states of the country.
History
The Mayiladuturai temple is believed to have been in existence since the ancient times when the rajas were ruling. The temple is said to have been of great significance during the medieval period when the Medieval Cholas were reigning. Some of the megalithic stones of black and white color were found in the place, where the temple is currently located. Mayiladuturai was initially believed to have been found or discovered by the saint of the seventh century, who was named Sambandar, who was part of the Tanjavur royal family. Initially imposed by the Brahmins that belong to Kannada, Telugu and Maratha religions, the place of Mayiladuturai was then transferred to the Nagapattanam district of the Tamil Nadu state. The temple was constructed by the ancient rulers who found the stones that were rather ancient and dated back to the olden times. The king of the time called the Astrologer to study the same and the astrologer was of the opinion that the temple was in existence since many years. Hence it was constructed again in the same place according to the historical, mythological and astrological theories.
Importance/Significance
Though the temple is fully dedicated to Lord Maha Vishnu who is seen here in the form of the Ranganathar, the temple follows and worships some other Gods as well that include Lord Ganesha, Lord Hanuman or the Aanjaneya, Goddess Durga and Goddess Parvati along with the Navagrahas. It is believed the Lord Vishnu is incarnated in the form of Ranganathar as it is in the Trichy temple and it is usually said that Ranganathar is comparatively more powerful than the other deities of the temple. Being a Ranganathar temple, it is believed that people who provide the main pooja and seva to get relief from serious problem
Festivals/Events/Gatherings
Being a temple that is totally dedicated to the deity and incarnation of the Lord Maha Vishnu, the temple celebrates the main festivals such as that of the Satyanarayana Pooja. Lord Vishnu is said to be very pleased by this pooja. The People who conduct this pooja should follow observe a fast prior to this. In addition to this, the temple celebrates the nine day festival called the Ratholsava, where Lord Ranganathar with His Partner, Goddess Saraswati is taken for a procession in the Golden chariot called the Ratham which is pulled by the devotees. It is believed that the people, who get a chance to touch the Ratham, will be lucky throughout their life.
