Description
Saptharishiswarar Temple is an ancient Hindu temple located at Ammachatram, Tamil Nadu. The presiding deity is known as Lord Saptharishiswarar and the Goddess as Gnanambigai.
History
Ammachatram Shiva Temple was built by Chola Kings and is currently maintained by Thanjavur Palace.
Importance/Significance
The significance of the Saptharishiswarar Temple is that the Sapta Rishis (Seven Sages) have worshiped Mahadeva here and arranged marriage for the Lord. The temple has Five Shivlingams, including the Moolavar. The main Shivlinga was worshiped by the Saptarishis. The other Shivalinga was installed by King Ravana for worship on his way back from Kailash to Lanka after obtaining a boon from Mahadev.
