Description
Two temples were constructed having a common compound wall to encourage agreement among the Saivitis and the Vaishnavitis. This temple is 1000-2000 years old; the historical name for this temple is “Tiru Mayyam”. It is situated in Tirumayam city in Pudukkottai district, Tamil nadu. The shrines are on the slope of the Tirumayam hill constructed from a whole rock. Lord Perumal is worshiped as Sathyamurthy Perumal blessing the devotees from the sanctorum under the Somachandra Vimana. This place is also worshiped as Sathya Kshtrum after the name of almighty Perumal. It is believed that this stretched out Perumal is the largest in India.
History
As god was in Nidhra on Adishes he was acting to be sleeping at that time two evil spirit Kaidaba and Madhu came to kidnap goddess Mahalakshmi and goddess Bhoodevi. Scared of the evil spirit goddess Mahalakshmi hid inside the Lord and goddess Bhoodevi at lord's feet. As he did not want to agitate the slumber Perumal, Adisesha emitted out his poison from his tongue and drove away the evil spirit. Adishesha was scared because with no authorization of Lord he had enacted this act. Perumal told him that the work which he did was an excellent work and valued his act. To provide evidence to this occasion, Adisesha appears in a waning pose.There are 2 famous shrines made of whole rock, one of Shiva and the other of Vishnu, neighboring to each other. The Shiva sanctuary, which is placed to the west side of the Vishnu sanctuary, is an older one of the two. These are situated at the foot of a mound on the southern part of the city.
Importance/Significance
This sanctuary is 1 of the hundred and eight Divyadesa temples of Lord Perumal. There are 2 presiding idols in the sanctuary almighty Sathyamurthy and almighty Tirumeyyar. Once in 12 years Thailakappu is carry out on the controlling idol present in the sanctuary.The fort of the Siva and Vishnu sanctorum are the main centers for tourists. The fort plays a significant role in the history of Thondaiman leaders of Pudukottae and the British. In 1687 AD the huge forty acre castle was constructer by Vijaye Ragunathi Sethupathe of Ramanathapurum on the mount. There is a Siva temple made of whole rock with inscriptions of music. There are remnants of a different fort. At the base of the mount are the temples of Shiva and Vishnu.
Festivals/Events/Gatherings
Devotees come from all over the country to pray for marriage, child benefit. For child benefit, people request to Ujjeevana Thayar and for all wealth. Also those pain from curses and black magic, anxious weakness and emotionally affected implore to Thayar. Followers strongly consider that Thayar will surely approach to free when they are in difficulty.Devotees from all over the country execute Tirumanjanum to Thayar, present vastras, and bangles. To Perumal they present butter and vastras, tulsi festoon and oil lamps. The nivedhana presented to Perumal is circulated to the followers at the temple.
