The holy temple of Thiru ooragam was built during the early medieval time by the azhwar saint saints in during 6th-9th centuries AD.It is said that, prahaladhan's grandson, Mahabali Chakravarthy did an extensive homam or havan to conquer the devendra lokam, which generally known as 'swargam' which indicates Paradise. But, the logam belonged to indiran , the master of the devendra logam. Being an excellent follower of sriman narayanan, Mahabali was being capitulated by the enticement and made the decision to obtain the devendra lokam. In order to make Mahabali comprehend and to penalize him, Srimaan Narayana had taken the Vaamana avatar which means dwarf and requested for 3 steps of his area. On listening to this, Mahabali made the decision to allow him to take 3 steps of the land. As a shock to Mahabali, Shriman Narayana who approached there as Vamana, blew up in size as his head moved towards the sky. By using his first step, shrimaan conquered the earth and sky, and with his second step, he protected the heaven and lastly he requested for the last or third step. Seeing this Mahabali Chakravarthy surrendered his head as Vamana's third step and finally was endowed by Shriman Narayanan.When his skull was crushed by Emperumaan's legs, he couldn't get the darshan of deity Thiruvikraman. So he interceded for his excellent Ulagalandha darshan. Since, he could not be given the Thirivikraman's darshan, Perumal provided his service as Aadhiseshan which is seen beside Ulagalandha Perumal.
