Description
The Thiuvazhmarban in Thiruvanparisaram is located 5 kms to the North of Nagarcoil junction. The Thiuvazhmarban is one of the two divya desams located in Nagercoil. The name of this place is derived from a five thousand year old temple which is dedicated to the Thiruvazhimarban .
History
This temple has the name of being the place of birth of a Mother, who had given an eminent son named Namalvar to sing and extend the magnificence of Lord Vishnu. The daughter of Tiruvazhmarban Pillai , Udaya Nangaai got married to Kaarimaran the chief of Kurunadu in the service of Nanjil Nadu, Tiruvenparisaram. The marriage took place in the house of Udaya Nangai. Even though years passed, they had no children. The duo visited the Tirukurungu which is also a divyadesam and prayed to God Nambi seeking a child. The Lord Nambi himself appeared in front of them and offered to be born to them and suggested to take the tamarind tree in Tirunagari and guaranteed that he himself as a child will bring enormous reputation to the couple.Udaya nangaai gave birth to a male child on the Vishaka Star day in the Tamil month of Vaikasi which was poornima. They took the child to the tamarind tree in Azhwar Tirunagari in a golden cradle, as directed by the Lord . The male child easily climbed up the tree with Dnana Mudra, surprising all those assembled there. The boy was given 16 years of penance.
Importance/Significance
The idol of the main deity in the temple is 9 feet high which is made up of special elements known as Katusrkara yogam (mixture of mustard and jaggery) and abhishekam which means sacred bathing is never done to it. The Chief deity has a shanku and a chakra in the hands and Goddess Mahalakshmi in his chest. Dasavatharam (Ten Avatars of Vishnu) paintings beautify the Indra Kalyana Mandapam (huge hall) of this temple. Other shrines for Garuda, Rama, Ganesha, Vishwasenar, Namalvar, Natarajar are present. Opposite to the temple there is a holy tank for the devotees to take bath.It is believed that the deity had a crown made up of gold and sparkling diamonds and many other valuable stones, but was stolen and the burglar cut the crown into numerous pieces. The thief was caught by the authorities and the remaining precious parts of the crown were recovered but till now the broken crown is there in the same condition.King kuashekara and King Thirumalai nayak carried oput the renovation of the Thiuvazhmarban temple. Now the Government of Tamil Nadu maintains the Thiuvazhmarban temple, through the Devashwom board.
