Once, Sage Vashishta was very worried as the cow had not returned after much time had passed. He later found that the cow Kamdhenu has been cursed and had malformed into a common one. The reason for the transformation was the obstacles that she had produced during the Pooja of Sage Vashistha. After consulting his assistants called Ganas, it is deduced that if he built a shrine in honor of Lord Shiva in an area between Thiruvanmayur and Mylapore, the cow can redeem its status. He then created a pasture in the area and installed the Sivlinga which is installed even now. He also made a tank which is called Gopathi Saras which is believed to have the power of curing illness if you bathe in its holy water on a full moon day.
