Description
The devotees who throng this temple carry back with them advantages of healing of ailments and mental peace apart from family happiness as well as the abundant grace of Mother Shenbagavalli. These people are also successful in their business ventures. It is in milk and sandalwood that the devotees offer Abishek and dress up the idols with Sari and Dhoti. Annadhanam, is important here as well.
History
Since the balance of equilibrium of the earth was to a large extent affected on the wedding of Lord Shiva with Parvathi because of a gathering of a lot of devotees in the Kaialash, Lord Shiva requested the sage Agasthya to go the South and correct the level of the land equally. When he was on his journey to the South sage Agasthya had to kill the demons as Vilvalan and Vadhabi in the interest of mankind, he was accorded the Bramahatti Dosha for murdering the demons which he washed off here. He is also known to be the creator of Agasthya Thirtha while responding to the wishes of the sages of Ponmalai. The temple was renovated in the year 1929.
Importance/Significance
Similar to the city of Madurai the importance of the temple lies in goddess Devi. When you enter the temple, you will be able to come across two powerful Dwara Balakis. In many of the temples it is customary to adore the Devi in the form she is installed; the Goddess is adored in a sitting position. Lord Rama also offered his worship in this temple.Poovananathar is a name which was derived from the worship of two snake leaders Padhuman and Thungan. Shenbagavalli's promising posture and royal standing adds more grace to the temple.
Festivals/Events/Gatherings
In this temple, you will be able to witness a ten days, Navarathri festival, Chithirai Theertham and Thirukalyanam on Tamil New Year's Day being special and important festivals of the temple, asides from a 10 days Vaikasi festival during May-June, Adipooram or Bangle festival, regular Amavasya, Poornima, Tamil and English New Year's days, Pradosham, Deepavali and Pongal are observed in the temple. Devotees throng the temple on all special puja days.
