Importance/Significance
The Sun Temple at Modhera is amongst the few shrines which is built to honor the Sun God. You will find it nestled near the banks of the Pushpavati River in Modhera,.King Bhimdev of the Slinky dynasty built the temple in 1026. He is supposed to be a descendant of the lineage of Sun God. It is similar to the Sun Temple at Knar in Orissa. When we study history, we will be able to find reference of this temple in the scriptures of Skandia Purina and Brahma Purina. The area which surrounded Modhera was known as Dharmaranya. Lord Rama blessed the place. The brilliant architecture of the temple is one of its own class. The temple encircled in 3 different but axially-coordinated and unified constituents. This shrine has been designed in such a manner that the first rays of the Sun cast on the image of the Lord Surya. Mahmud Ghazni plundered the temple. In spite of the plundering the architectural grandeur of the temple, Mahmud has in no way vanished. Irrespective of what is left the remnants still provide the visitors with a great enchantment to behold. The temple has been erected on a raised platform and it looks as majestic as ever because of its grand structure. In the temple, you will be able to see the exterior walls of the temple etched with sophisticated carvings, bragging about the mastery of art in those times. The entire structure has been camouflaged with the sculptural decorations of Gods, Goddesses, beasts, birds and flowers. The Sun Temple can be divided into three parts: Sabha Mandap, Surya Kund as well as the Guda Mandap.
