History
Sethupathis, the kings of Ramanathapuram region between 1414 A.D. and 1649 A.D designed the Ramanathaswamy shrine. Since then, it has expanded in extreme measures and achieved to the existing level. The main deity of the shrine is Ramanathaswamy (Shiva) by means of lingam. There are two lingams within the sanctum - one designed by Goddess Sita, from sand, living as the main deity, Ramalingam and the one introduced by Master Hanuman from Kailash known as Vishwalingam. Rama directed that Vishwalingam should be worshipped first since it was introduced by Master Hanuman - the custom proceeds even nowadays.Like all historical temples in Southern India, there is a higher substance walls (madil) on all four ends of the shrine property calculating about 865 legs furlong from eastern to western and one furlongs of 657 legs from northern to south with large systems (Gopurams) at the eastern and western and completed checkpoint systems on the south and northern. The shrine has stunning long passages in its internal, operating between large colonnades on systems above five legs high. It is said that the Ramanathaswamy Shrine was designed to identify where Rama worshipped Master Shiva after eliminating the devil Ravana, master of Lanka, who was an excellent devotee of Shiva. As the tale goes, Hanuman was sent to Kailas to carry the Lingam to be able to praise Shiva. It further goes that Hanuman did not come back before the appearance of the excellent time, so Sita herself molded a Lingam for Rama. Later, when Hanuman came, he was consoled and the Lingam introduced by Him was given priority over Ramanatha. It was worshipped first before the praise of Ramanatha by the enthusiasts.
