Sikkal Singaravelavar Murugan Temple is a famous temple of the Hindus where the residing god is Lord Murugan. It can be unofficially called the seventh Murugan Padaiveedu after the six popular Arupadaiveedu. The temple is located in a place called Sikkal, near the city of Nagapattinam in Tamil Nadu. The rarity of the temple is that it has Shiva as well as Vishnu under the same complex. The temple is 83rd if considered the Tevara Stalam series built in the Chola era of ancient India, along the river bank of Cauvery. The shrine is a very significant one to Hindus.
History
It is believed that the temple must have been built during the Chola rule in ancient India and inscriptions from the Chola period and the Vijayanagar empire have been found in this temple, spread over 2 acres or more, as a testimony to this claim. Temple inscriptions often are a mark of the ancient historical connections of a temple and India's architectural history is quite rich. However, according to legend that temple has been built by Muchukunda Cholan, who is associated with the Tiruvarar legend.
Importance/Significance
The importance of the temple lies in it being a sacred pilgrim spot for the Hindus having both Shiva and Vishnu's shrines present. Many Hindus also believe that this place was a jasmine forest long, long ago and because of the beautiful smell of jasmine, the god Kamadhenu, the wish fulfilling divine cow, dwells in this temple. Thus the people come from far and wide to seek his blessings and get their wishes and desires fulfilled.
Facts/Mythology
Though the temple is said to be a Saiva temple, in reality, it is dedicated to the mighty Lord Shiva. But the main deity here, however is Lord Singaravelavar. According to mythology, Rishi Vasishta had created a Shivalingam out of butter which was made from the divine cow, Kamadhenu's milk. After performing the puja, he saw that the Shivalingam was stuck at the place and could not be shifted. This gave the place its name' Sikkal'. It is believed that Rishi Vashishta and Rishi Viswamitra have both worshipped the lord in this temple.
Festivals/Events/Gatherings
Everyday there are six services offered to Lord Murugan. Marriages too take place in the temple in the Kalyana Mandapam. A major annual festival is Brahmotsavam which is celebrated in the Tamil month called Chittirai. Another festival that draws a huge number of devotees and tourist is the Skanda Shashti Utsavam celebrated in a grand way in the Tamil month of Arpasi. It is held in honour of Singaravelavar. It is said that during Skanda Shashti, the Lord would receive his spear or Vel as they call it, from his mother a day before Surasamharam to slay a demon called Surapadman. The mark of the receiving of the Vel would be the miraculous sweating of Murugan's idol. This legendary myth draws a lot of curious visitors to Sikkal Singaravelavar Murugan Temple.
