Description
ThirukkurungudiAzhagiyaNambiPerumal Temple is an ancient temple which is located in the small town of Thirukurungudi, located at a distance of about 40 kilometers from the Tiruneveli. The temple is situated at the foot of the hills called the Mahendra hills, which lies in the Western Ghat. The temple overlooks a scenic beauty and it seems like Mother Nature has beautifully grasped the temple in her laps. Dedicated to Lord Vishnu, the temple attracts thousands of devotees especially the vasihnavite all through the year. A beautiful thing about the temple is that all the houses nearby are constructed parallel to the temple ensuring that the temple remains the focus and lies in the central point.
History
Historians do not have a clear cut picture as to who built the temple and what was the actual reason behind its construction. However, there are certain inscriptions in the walls of the temple which point to the fact that it was built somewhere around the 9th century. There is also a legend related to this temple. Once, lord Narayan was lectured by Ramauja in the sacred placed of Badri. At the same spot, he took the form of a Vaishnava and learnt all the principles to become a staunch Vaishnava. Hence, the lord here is referred to as Vaishnava Nambi or NambiPerumal, Since then the spot has been considered very sacred and later on the temple of ThirukkurungudiAzhagiyaNambiPerumal was built in order to form a place for gathering all the Vaihnavites.
Importance/Significance
ThirukkurungudiAzhagiyaNambiPerumal Temple is considered to be very religious spot. Lord Vishnu is the main deity and hence people worship here to seek his blessings for health, wealth and a prosperous married life. Keeping fast and offering white color clothes is considered very auspicious. This spot is also significant for the very fact that mythology reveals that Lord Hanuman had actually taken the leap towards Lanka on this very location and hence the region is very sacred. People worship Lord Hanuman and seek his blessings and strength to face life's challenges.
Facts/Mythology
A unique fact about this temple is that here the lord is seen in five different variations. ThirumalaiNambi is a form which depicts the lord lying atop the hill, SayanaKolam is the sleeping posture of the lord, while the other three forms are NinraKolam, ThirupaarkadalNamnbni and irunthaKolam. These forms are unique to the temple. Further, the architecture is also amazing here, with sculptures of traders from Arab along with their camels reaching the temple. In the renovation process a special technology called the water blasting technology has been used in order to protect the beauty of the stone sculptures along with their original color and texture, Transparent varnish has also been used at appropriate locations to ensure that the identity of the sculptures remain intact.
Festivals/Events/Gatherings
Special puja's are observed on every Tuesday and Thursday which is coupled with aarti and chanting hymns. The place is also ideal for organizing marriage events.
