Description
The Gunaseelam Vishnu Temple is a Hindu shrine devoted to Lord Vishnu it has been located at a distance of 20 km from the town of Trichy, in the South Indian state of Tamil Nadu. The temple is located on the banks of the stream Kollidam. The name of this place Gunaseelam derives after "Gunam" and "Seelam" meaning the place where illness is cured. It also means the qualities as well as seelam means presuming a lower place. Therefore Gunaseelam is the set where the follower's troubles are addressed by lord Vishnu from his blissful position.
History
For people who are mentally ill, this temple is their destination. A follower, Gunaseelar by first name, following his darshan on Tirupathi, came here in addition to beg to the Lord & to approach and stay on the banks of Cauvery. The noble obliged. Gunaseelam place came to be known after his name. The temple is totally different compared to what it was 100years back. With followers input, the ancestor's trustees had changed the shrine to reproduce 21st century architecture. New photographs & paintings beautify the holy place, with flooring. A hand written documents must be amending in 500 decades of Kaliyuga. Therefore, the redecoration was completed. The shrine has a place of pilgrimage for Viganasar, Vaikanasa Aagamam creator. The fable said �he was rewarded Brahminhood from Venkateshwara beside Brahma, who is the god of creation.�
Importance/Significance
Followers assume that since Tirupathi God appeared himself before Gunaseela Maharishi, people who cannot go Tirupathi will be able to visit this shrine & their prayers are said to be answered here. Through the Uchikalam and Arthajamam, water is spread on devotees, which is believed to force out evil diseases and mental illnesses.
Festivals/Events/Gatherings
A visit to this shrine makes followers believe that it cures mentally challenged people, who are kept in the shrine for forty-eight days and all the required or necessity facilities are provided to them. At last due to the the presiding diety God Prasanna Venkatachalapathi it is assumed that people get cure in those 48days. It is considered that the first of its kind mental rehabilitation center in Tamil Nadu is set by this temple for mentally challenged people. The holy place has 6 rituals daily at different times from 6:30 am - 8:30 pm, and 3 yearly festivals in its calendar. Yearly Brahmotsavam is the 11day festival visited by thousands of followers from all parts of the world. The Temple is maintained by a heritable decision-making trustee.The shrine rituals actions are executed six times in a day. The rituals performed at this temple consist of four steps. First step is comprised of Abhisheka i.e. the sacred bath, which is done on the main Deity of the temple with dhud (milk). After the Abhisheka, God's throng is decorated with beautiful garlands and the process is Alangaram. Here comes the offering of food which is known as the Deepa aradanai is also conducted in this temple by the devotees visiting this temple.
