Description
Ponmalai Velayudha Swamy Murugan Temple is an ancient temple which is located on a 600 feet high hill and is located midway between Kinathukavu and Pollachi. This is a very famous religious spot in the state of Tamil Nadu. The temple also forms assort of trekking events as nearly 200 steps needs to be climbed up to reach the main sanctum. This consists of one of the shrines where the stain Arunagiri Natha used to sing hymns in praise of the lord and hence is considered very auspicious. Further, the place is also located in such an area which has very good road connection network and can be easily reached from any part of the state
History
The temple is believed to have been constructed somewhere in the thirteenth century by the then zamindar who belonged to the place of Purayipalaya. Later on the entire temple was renovated by the kings of Mysore. The zamindar was a staunch supporter of the Lord and hence he decided to worship the lord on the palani hills. However, due to one or the other reason he was unable to do the same and had to come back home disappointed. On the same day, he got a dream that the footprints of the lord were imbibed atop one of the hillocks and he was the one chosen to search and find the same. The zamindar with his army members went to all the hills and eventually found the footprints on one of the hillocks. He started praying the footprints daily. Later on, he himself built a large and magnificent temple dedicated to Lord Murugan. The main deity came to be known as Ponmalai Velayudha Swamy and since then has been worshipped in the same form.

Facts/Mythology
The idol of Ponmalai Velayudha Swamy Murugan is seen carved out of stone and bronze. The entire idol is garlanded with rudraksha chain and some other things which signify the aspects of the moon and the sun. This is unique and such an idol is found only in this temple. He holds a rod in his right hand and is worshipped along with his consorts valli and deivanai. Such a form is unique and the beautiful sculptures engraved in bronze truly speak of the rich culture which was prevalent in those times. The footprints which are preserved in this temple forms a unique feature which attracts thousands of tourists and devotees.
