Bhimashankar Temple is one of the 12 jyotirilingas of shiva in india. Bhimashankar is source of the river bhima. it confluence with river Krishna near Raichur. Temple is supremely blessed by the nature , as it is covered with lush green forest. It is also a place of great importance for its scenic beauty and rich natural resources. History
In tretayug there was a demon known as 'Tripurasura'lived in jungle of Bhimashankar. In a motive to achieve immortality, he started a penance in the jungle of Bhimashankar to Lord Shiva. Lord Shiva is known for his kind heartedness among his devotees. Lord Shiva impressed by the commitment of 'Tripurasura', so blessed him with immortality but with condition that 'he should not harm people or else he may be punished.' As the time passed, 'Tripurasura' started harassing people as well as other deities. Lord shiva came to know about the incident, thus in order to punish tripurasura, Lord Shiva prayed to Goddess parvati for the rescue. On the night of kartik pournima, Lord Shiva and Parvati took new form and killed tripurasura.
Importance/Significance
Bhimashankar is an one of the oldest temple amongst one of the 12 Jyotirlingas of Shiva. Far away from the turmoil of the urban life, Bhimashankar can be termed a pilgrim paradise. It is surrounded by the dense forest which satisfy your basic senses Once a Bhatirao Lakadhara used to live in Bhimashankar. Once when he was cutting some wood, he struck the tree with his axe. Blood started to flow from the earth. He got scared and ran away. Soon, a crowd had gathered there , with them their was milk cow and people made cow stand at the place. Bleeeing of the earth stopped as soon as the milk came out of the cows udder. People were left in complete distraught as they saw glowing JyotirLinga of Shiva, came from the earth. People erected a temple there and installed the JyotirLinga in the temple. This temple eventually came to be temple known as Bhima Shankara.
Facts/Mythology
Bhimashankara temple is built in 18 th century by Nana Phadnavis. Temple is endowed with Nagara style of architecture . Vishwakarma sculptors was instrumental for the temple structure. The shikhara was built by Nana Phadnavis. The great Maratha ruler Shivaji is said to have made special offerings to this temple . Bhimshakaram have been referred to in literature, dating back to the 13 th century CE. As per historical records, it has been said ,Saint Dyaneshwar visitied the temple during his sainthood. . A unique bell (Roman style) can be seen in front of the temple which was presented by Chimaji Appa
Festivals/Events/Gatherings
People from all over Maharashtra visit the temple through the year. Shivrati is celebrated as day of shiva, which is celebrated with humongous participation from the devotees. During Shivratri there is a huge number of followers, which brightens up the temple. The best time to visit is between August and February. it is better to avoid visiting during summer.
